What are the benefits of flat roof insulation?
Flat roof insulation helps improve energy efficiency by reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, which can lower heating and cooling costs. It also makes indoor temperatures more comfortable and stable, helps prevent condensation and damp, and can extend the lifespan of the roof by protecting it from temperature changes.
To insulate a flat roof, insulation materials are laid between your ceiling and the roof membrane to help prevent heat escaping. Adding insulation to your flat roof will help slash your energy bills by 25% and reduce heat loss within your home.
Types of flat roof insulation
Warm deck or warm roof insulation – This type of flat roof insulation uses insulating materials laid on top of the existing surface. Warm roof insulation is the best way to insulate flat roofs as there’s no need to deal with condensation issues. To install warm roof insulation, at least 100mm of rigid board insulation is laid on top of a vapour control layer. Once the insulation layer has been installed, the roof is completed with a rubber membrane.
Cold roof insulation – This type of flat roof insulation is the most common way people have this insulation installed, as it’s the easiest and cheaper option for flat roofs. Cold roof insulation places insulating material between the joists and supports the roof structure. It’s important to keep a gap for air flow, usually a 50-60mm gap, and this gap is left between the roof and insulation.
