Electric Storage Heaters

Electric storage heaters are the most common type of electric heating, storing heat overnight when electricity is cheaper.

Electric storage heaters use electricity to generate heat. They don’t require a wet central heating system like boilers do. Electric storage heaters generally store heat overnight when electricity is cheaper and release it during the day when needed.

Electric Storage Heaters

What are electric storage heaters and are any grants available?

Electric storage heaters, also known as night storage heaters, can store heat overnight when electricity is cheaper and release it during the day when needed. Storage heaters can use electricity to heat your home at any time, but most people use the heat during the day.

If your property is not served by mains gas, you could be eligible for grant funding to install storage heaters. Homeowners and private tenants who claim certain income-related benefits may qualify for 100% free replacements of their electric room heater systems. These scheme aim to reduce the cost of heating for low-income households and reduce carbon footprint.  If you receive a free storage heater grant, you will not have to repay it at any time

What are the benefits of electric storage heaters?

With electric storage heaters, you can access special electricity tariffs, such as Economy 7, that provide cheaper rates at certain times of the day.  With a tariff like this, you get a more affordable rate (usually overnight), making it cheaper to charge storage heaters.

Electric storage heaters are also cheaper to install than a central heating system and easier to maintain as they only require mains electricity and do not require pipework.

An affordable and flexible heating source

Electric storage heaters are the a very flexible option as modern designs are slimmer and can be used in more situations than traditional radiators. Relatively maintenance-free, storage heaters tend to have a longer life span as they have no moving parts or liquids.

Modern storage heaters benefits include:

  • Higher heat retention (they hold heat for longer)
  • Improved heating controls
  • Heat can be released quickly if needed
