What is an air source heat pump?
Air source heat pumps are powered by electricity but with a 400% efficiency rating. Compare this to the average 90% rating of a new boiler or older boilers (that can be as low as 60%), and you’ll quickly realise why air source heat pumps are a popular way to heat your home or business.
A 400% efficiency rating means that an air source heat pump generates four units of heat for every unit of electricity used. Heat pumps create more energy than they use, lower heating costs by up to 25% and produce 75% less carbon emissions. Even in cold weather, an air source heat pump will work and generate heat in temperatures as low as -20°C.
How do air source heat pumps work?
Air source heat pumps are installed outside, normally at the side or rear of the building. They absorb heat from the outside air, which is increased using a compressor, before being released into your home.
Air source heat pumps transfer the heat by pumping liquid through pipes to radiators or underfloor heating. The benefit of an air to water system, over the air to air heat pump, is that it will produce hot water in addition to heat.
Before installing an air source heat pump, your property needs to be insulated to reduce heat loss through walls, floors and the roof. If heat is easily escaping the property, the air source heat pump will work twice as hard to generate the heat needed.

Switching to an air source heat pump
Like any heating system, air source heat pumps work more effectively in properties with high levels of thermal efficiency. Where needed, we’ll always recommend that homes that need additional insulation, such as cavity wall insulation or loft insulation, have this installed before a heat pump.
Air source heat pumps offer year-round comfort without breaking the bank. With the rise in renewable energy sources, such as solar power, the use of air source heat pumps contributes to a greener and more sustainable future.
