The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is one of the ways the UK government is working towards its net-zero emissions target by 2050. The scheme supports the installation of heat pumps in England and Wales. In Scotland, grants through Home Energy Scotland are available for heat pumps.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is designed to make low-carbon heating more affordable by helping homeowners and small non-domestic property owners cover the high upfront cost of installing heat pumps. Available across England and Wales, the scheme supports installations with a capacity of up to 45kW, making it suitable for most homes and small commercial buildings.
Heat pumps provide a clean, energy-efficient alternative to traditional gas boilers. By extracting heat from the air or ground, they can deliver up to four times the energy they consume, lowering reliance on fossil fuels, and significantly cutting carbon emissions. When paired with renewable energy sources like solar panels, homes and businesses can transition to a low-carbon future.
Who qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
You must be a homeowner in England or Wales to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The heat pump grant will run until April 2028. This grant is worth £7,500 and is a no strings attached scheme, it’s not a loan and doesn’t need to be repaid.
After the £7,500 has been deducted for your heat pump quote, the remaining cost of the installation is what is left to pay. To be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you will need to meet these requirements:
- You must be a homeowner or small business owner
- Your property must be in England or Wales
- The building must have a valid energy performance certificate (EPC) issued within the last 10 years. If not, you will need a new EPC certificate
How to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Get quotes from MCS certified heat pump installers, and confirm if you’re eligible for the scheme. Once you’ve agreed on a quote, application for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme can apply. Your chosen installer will apply for the grant on the Ofgem website. Once your grant confirmation has been confirmed the £7,500 will be taken off the amount you pay for installation.
